EVOLVE - INNOVATE - CONNECT
NEVER ENDING LifeCYCLE of RADIO
The world changes, radio evolves
Evolution refers to the resilience of the radio to its sustainability. Radio has indeed accompanied historical moments, like moments that are personal to us. Broadcasts and public speaking marked an era. Voices and music have accompanied our daily lives. Radio has been following changes in our world for over a century, evolving with it. From AM to FM to XM and from Stereos to cars, radio has always been part of our lives. Radio remains the world’s witness and relay.

THE WORLD CHANGES, RADIO ADAPTS AND INNOVATES
Radio has had to adapt to new technologies to remain the go-to medium of mobility, accessible everywhere and to everyone. Whereas yesterday’s radio was simply a transistor on our kitchen tables, nowadays the radio follows us on each of our trips thanks to smartphones. Technological progress and digitization have made it possible for the radio to adapt to our new behaviors and lifestyles. Radio is no longer just a sound medium: today, the radio has reached all parts of the world from rural Africa to South pole. Radio will continue to innovate and evolve for many generations. Can you play a role in it?

THE WORLD CHANGES, RADIO CONNECTS
The connection highlights radio’s services to our society—natural disasters, socio-economic crises, epidemics, etc. No matter the events, radio connects us to forge or maintain links. Public service announcements, alerts, and broadcasts, even the latest cellphone towers, are examples of services provided and solutions offered by radio to best meet listeners’ needs.
As the world changes, so do radio. Thus, during the Covid 19 pandemic, radio made it possible, for example, to ensure continuity of learning, to fight against misinformation, and to promote barrier gestures.
Canadian Innovation Project Contest (CIPC) Details
Can you reinvent radio once again?
WHAT IS THE Canadian INNOVATION PROJECT?
Design and develop a mobile app for Android and/or iOS for a Toronto-based media company, "Dil Se Media Group" to engage listeners creatively on a radio station.
Final deliverable: Either have an app uploaded to app stores or provide a single installation file for selected platform(s).
Basic features may include:
Live Streaming: The in-app player to play live channels and on-demand content. During every track, the name and image of the artist and the name of the current song will be displayed near the player. This is a must-have requirement to consider your submission.
Schedule of programs: user can browse schedule by program or weekday.
Multi Channels: Allow the app to show several radio stations simultaneously.
Manage user login & profiles: This could be simplified by account integration with services like google.
Rate Songs and programs
News: Inform the audience about essential news updates, including links.
Social Media Integration: Ability for users to "like" station and share their favourite songs on social media
Contact Us: This option will allow all listeners to contact the radio in real-time via text messaging.
Song Request: The ability to get feedback about songs or artists the listener would like to listen to.
Display details of media partners and sponsors
Advanced features may include (these are just a few ideas. we will welcome your creativity and innovation):
Engage users: Develop a point system based on specific criteria such a listening time, feedback, ratings, etc. Users can unlock additional features or awards based on points.
Artificial intelligence: Use artificial intelligence (AI) to develop futuristic features, e.g. suggest on-demand programs or play ads based on listening habits. You may also do statistical analysis using AIs to uncover interesting information.
Opinions Matter: Ability for users to share voice opinions on current affairs. Moderators can approve these opinions to create an automated "opinion Matters" feed on current affairs or discussion topics. This feature can also be linked with the point system.
Connect people for social causes: People can connect according to their profile settings based on similar opinions on a social cause.
This list of features is given to fuel your imagination. You need to prioritize features you can practically implement in the given time. The application should be functional for you to win a prize.
IT'S A TEAM PROJECT
This innovation project requires a team of four students to participate. Each team member is expected to play one or more of the following four roles:
Project Manager (PM)
Business Analyst (BA)
Designer (team member)
Developer (team member)
The project manager will be considered a team leader, and PM details will be used for critical communications. PM is required to share information and coordinate with his team. A team can have cross-functional team members. It means members can play multiple roles during the project. However, we expect each person to be primary for one of these four roles. Finalists will be asked to do presentations according to their primary functions.
Please review this web page for a detailed definition of the roles. Our goal is to help you understand how real-life projects are executed.
Who is ELIGIBLE?
All students on planet earth in grade 12 and below are eligible for this contest. It means a participating team needs to have four students in grade 12 or below. A team can have students from multiple continents.
Registration starts on january 1, 2022
We would like 2022 to celebrate as a year of innovation. Hence, team registrations will open on January 1, 2022. We will publish the registration form shortly.
February 13 is celebrated as "Radio Day" thanks to UNESCO. We will close registrations on this very special "Radio Day".
What should i do if project requirements are not clear?
All registered teams will be invited to an information session after registrations are closed. You are encouraged to clarify project requirements with us in this session. We will also publish a form to submit your questions before the session. We will also be available to provide clarity to you during the project.
In real-world innovation projects, requirements are not well-written. Innovations are like a journey that starts with a high-level vision. As we travel through this journey, we learn new things. We adapt and adjust quickly according to the latest information we gathered. This process is called agile project development, and it is best suited for innovation projects.
Our focus in this contest is innovation. We are looking forward to seeing your creativity and vision for the future. Radio has gone through innovation cycles several times. Can you be a change agent to help people and communities connect through the radio in more creative ways?
When is the project due for selecting finalists?
We will close submission on April 13, 2022. We will shortlist projects and invite you to give a short presentation. Guidelines for submission of the project and presentation will be published later.
We will select finalists based on the presentation. Finalists will be announced in late April.
Benefits for the finalists
All Finalists will get an opportunity to work with architects in the IT industry to refine their design and implementation. Finalists will also present their ideas on the radio station, which will be voted by the listeners and worth 10% of the final score.
