EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS COURSE DETAILS
What is the goal of the Public Speaking & Debate class?
Public Speaking and Debate are intrinsic to our life and society. Hence, students from an early age must be given the opportunities and coaching to develop these skills. This program offers a structured learning environment where students develop their oracy, leadership, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills. Through this program, students will learn to master the art of presenting and communicating convincingly and persuasively.
What is the goal of the English Language class?
The goal is to prepare students for taking advanced reading, writing and presentation levels. The students will learn in the three main areas of core grammar, reading and comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills.
Can I attend the course if I am in a lower or higher grade?
Yes. Age is just a number. While the grades serve as a baseline for eligibility to attend the class, we recognize that all students in the same grade are not equal. Sometimes, younger students may have greater talent or vice versa. Therefore, we don’t limit the entry. The only expectation is that the reasoning skills, ability to comprehend verbal passages and communication skills are developed to the extent that they align with other students.
How many students are in a course?
We believe in keeping class sizes small for more personalized and effective learning. Therefore, only 10-12 students are allowed in one class.
What will I learn in the course?
There is a 3-point focus in both the foundation and advanced level of public speaking and debate courses- Public Speaking, Debate and Leadership. The English course focuses on Reading & Comprehension, Vocabulary & Writing, and Presentation & Speeches.
English Course (Gr 4-5)
- Core Grammar - nouns, pronouns, articles, verbs, adjectives, conjunctions, prepositions, phrases etc.
- Sentence structure and formation
- Expressions like poetry, short stories etc.
- Verbal analysis & analogies
- Word reasoning and verbal comprehension
- Presentations and speeches
Public Speaking & Debate Foundation (Gr 5-6)
- Developing a personal speaking style
- Storytelling
- Interpretive reading
- Speech development and practice
- Persuasive & informative speeches
- Basics of Debate and argument construction
- In-class mock speeches & debates
Public Speaking & Debate Advanced (Gr 7-9)
- Developing a personal speaking style
- Understanding rhetoric and using it effectively
- Writing effective speeches
- Debate Analysis and Parts of the Debate
- CNDF & BP format of the debate
- Modelling, refutation, POI and whip speeches
- Leadership and critical skills like goal setting, time management, conflict resolution, feedback and effective teamwork
Will there be an in class test or exam?
The classes have an in-class activity component where students practice and demonstrate what they have learned weekly. Every quarter, there will be an in-class contest where students are expected to come prepared. For Public Speaking & Debate class, there will be a mock speech/debate contest. For the English class, students will have an in-class test.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
GOALS FOR THE STUDENTS

PURPOSE
CK STEM believes in providing a well-balanced, holistic, and fun learning environment where students not only develop their intellect, problem-solving, math or programming skills but also gain confidence and empower themselves. Public Speaking and Debate is an intrinsic part of our life and successful society, hence, it is essential that students from an early age are given the opportunities and coaching to develop these skills.

Why JOIN?
The Public Speaking & Debate Program at CK STEM aims at offering a structured and safe learning environment over the course of the school year where students have all the abilities to develop their oracy, leadership, collaboration, communication and critical thinking skills. Through this program, students will learn mastering the art of presenting and communicating in a convincing, credible and persuasive manner. It also helps students become more informed about political and global affairs, socio-economic and environmental issues as well as provide a venue for students to train for debate competitions.

WHAT THE STUDENTS WILL BE LEARNING AND PRACTICING
1WHO SHOULD JOIN
- Grade 8-10 students
- It is highly recommended that the students have either completed the CKSTEM foundation level or a minimum of one year of public speaking experience
232 ONLINE SESSIONS
- Advanced public speaking and debating
- More intense and advanced where students will continue to build onto their skills
- Participate in debate competitions
3SEMESTER 1A - EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING
- This will build onto the previously learned elements of a speech and include, in addition:
- Body language, elements of speech, impromptu & persuasive speeches
- Organization of speech: Summarizing and expanding on a speech
- Effective note-taking
- Verbatim Vs Readout speech (memorizing, reading through information or being comfortable to expand based on their notes)
- Different forms of presentation: presentation, video, podcasts, etc.
- Canadian parliamentary debate
- Constructing and deconstructing effective arguments
4SEMESTER 1B - LEADERSHIP SKILLS
Composition of a leader

- Goal setting & Planning

5SEMESTER 2 - ADVANCED DEBATING
- Getting deeper into the structure and composition of debate
- Constructing arguments
- Effective use of data and facts
- Refutation - counter-arguments and rebuilding arguments
- Rebuttal – identifying themes and how to close the debate effectively
6PRACTICE & COMPETITION
Students will engage in several activities throughout the sessions that will help them train for internal and external competitions
7ASSIGNMENTS
Students will be regularly assigned work to research and prepare before the next class.
